Nova Scotian Artist Lynn Johnson – artist statement
Although I work in a representational style, I never want a viewer to wonder if they’re looking at a photograph. My work is just as much about what I feel towards a subject as what I actually see. With this expression in mind, I hope the viewer will relate to the work – want to put themselves in the landscape, or feel a sense of nostalgia when viewing a still life. I think most of our fondest memories are not so much about a place or thing, but how it felt being there in the moment.
I work in acrylics, striving to achieve realistic works that capture a strong sense of light & colour. I use warm & cool contrasts and a limited palette to create vibrancy & mood. I hesitate to say I’m self-taught. I have been fortunate over a span of 20 years to study under many gifted art instructors, both local and from abroad.
I love to do commissioned paintings. It’s a thrill for me to bring to life something that is important and meaningful to someone else. From their own photos, reference materials & memories I enjoy the challenge of trying to see through someone else’s perspective, feeling what they felt & putting it all together in a painting.
Corporate commissions are welcome. I also print note cards, magnets, bookmarks and custom corporate Christmas cards.
